For Students At All Levels

Based on state mandates of the Least Restrictive Statue Robert A. Black has an open enrollment policy  for all students with special needs.

Conference with parents/guardians may be held during the report pick-up times at the first and third marking periods. The teacher comment portion of the student progress report will be used to indicate promotion or retention status of the student.

At the second marking period, parent will be notified if a student is at risk of not being promoted. The teacher will send information to the principal and a letter and/or phone call will notify the parent. A conference may be scheduled with the principal (or designee), teacher, and parent. An intervention plan will be discussed with the parent to assist a child academically at risk.Documentation regarding conferences and notices will be maintained as part of the student’s file for ready reference. Specific eighth grade guidelines will be discussed at parent meetings.

For Eighth Grade Students

The promotion guidelines in the  column above would also apply to 8th grade students except that the parent/guardian would be notified by the teacher of possible non-graduation at the end of the first marking period. An intervention plan will be necessary for a student with 2 or more F’s. If a student has not improved with an intervention, by the end of the first semester, parents will be notified of possible non-graduation. Parent signatures are requested at all conferences.

Homework

Homework is an important factor in increasing student achievement. We expect students to spend time each evening completing homework. Homework reinforces class instruction, enables students to learn more through their own work, and helps develop the sense of self-discipline and good work habits so important to success in any pursuit. In addition, to the regularly assigned homework, we ask that your child spend at least 20 minutes each evening reading for pleasure.  We ask that parents of kindergarten students read to their child for 20 minutes.

Parents, please assist your child with their homework pertaining to each subject area. Determine the allotted time your child should spend reviewing their homework based on their strengths and/or weaknesses. All homework should be of superior quality and initialed before submitting to their teachers.
